A glorious sunny weekend. Hardly knew what the sun looked like anymore after the wettest and coldest August in the past 100 years (so the weatherman told us), but then that's probably to compensate for the hottest and driest June and July we had in a long time.
Went for a walk in the country yesterday which was very peaceful, not like today's walk by the lake with crowds everywhere, but fortunately we know a few less frequented spots and then spent a nice hour by the lake after all.
The forecast for the next few days is not too bad either, but I won't be able to make use of it as it's off to hospital on Tuesday morning. (Will have to get up at 3.30 am :(.)
I will be operated some time during the morning, but don't know yet exactly when. :behindsofa:

If all goes well I may be back home on Wednesday already but still certified ill at home for at least the rest of the week. The results won't be out until in two weeks' time though. Fingers crossed all will be well, and I will be back on here soon.

Hello to everyone. I first joined 175 days ago when I was researching Derek Tangye books when I had spare time. Then many things transpired and I was preoccupied. Now I have time and I am again working my way through all of Derek's books after a number of years. I have recently received an email to join in and have a go so here I am. I have to say this is the first forum that I have joined and now I do not know what to do? Any suggestions.

It would be nice to hear from someone likeminded. See my limited profile.

Here's hoping

I can't believe how fast this year is flying by - how can it possibly be September already? According to Jonathan Powell, the weather forecaster who frightened me last month by saying that northern areas could expect some snow this month, we are now in for an Indian summer with temperatures up into the low to mid seventies for much of the month, and a drier than average October and November as well. Hope he is right on both counts! It would be lovely to have a settled warm spell for our Norfolk holiday and I wouldn't mind it being dry for my Cornish trip in November too.

We should be receiving our Derek and Jeannie daffodil bulbs from Ron Scamp fairly soon too, shouldn't we? My invoice said they would be dispatched to me in September. Must be paying a visit to the garden centre too very soon to get my prepared hyacinth bulbs. I refuse to call them Christmas hyacinths because, no matter how early I have planted them in previous years I have never yet managed to get them into flower before mid January. I used to buy them at Southport Flower Show which is always the third weekend in August and planted them as soon as I got home but they still didn't flower before January. Still, it's nice to have them in bloom when all the Christmas lights and decorations have come down and the house is looking a bit bare and gloomy.

Sorry, I really shouldn't be mentioning the "C" word on 1st September, should I? Apologies, I will try not to do it again until at least mid November!

Dry and sunny here again today - typical really, isn't it? Schools go back tomorrow around here so, having been wet, chilly and miserable for most of August, we most probably shall have that Indian summer now that the kids will be back at their desks - and you too Adrian. Hope you have a much less stressful term ahead of you.

After it had poured down with rain for days with flooding and tornados in northern parts of our area we actually had a few hours of sunshine today before more rain accompanied by thunder and lightning came down in the afternoon. The temperature was down to just 12 degr. C during the day. That's rather autumn than summer. Must have been even colder tonight. When I opened the window in the evening there was almost a wintry touch in the air.
Poor nephew Tobi who got married today. Everyone had expected to be able to wear summer dresses and Vivian, the bride, will probably have shivered with cold in her wedding dress. We would have been part of it all, too, if Rolf and I were not ill at the moment. As we would have had to travel several hours to get to the wedding, we just had to cancel it. Rolf has problems with his arms and should avoid driving whenever he can for a while, so that was it. Anyway, hope they will email some photos soon.

The Donkey Sanctuary recently asked Facebook users to tell them why donkeys in particular meant so much to them. I wrote a few lines mentioning that it was mainly Derek's books that had started my interest in donkeys.
The Donkey Sanctuary took up this thread and recommended the books to Facebook users by adding:
"If you haven't come across the Minack Chronicles, the books are a real pleasure to read. Lovely to read about their donkeys Penny, Fred, Merlin and Susie as well as their life and other animals".
- which reminds me, I should add that next year 'A Gull on the Roof' will be republished, so back to Facebook.

Hello eveyone, I have had so many hic-cups with being able to post a new thread but Jeff and Linda have been really wonderful and tonight I seem (fingers crossed) to be able to say hello to everyone again. I have to thank all the people who welcomed me on my registering with this wonderful site and forum but, as I am sure you will agree Jeff and Linda have been great in getting me up and running again.

I had seen the videos mentioned in other threads on YouTube before I joined but have watched them again and can now put at least two faces to the names of the regular lovely people on this site. Hopefully tonight will be the start of me being able to join in with conversations and hopefully put my pictures of one of my meetings with Derek on the site for you all to see. Take care and keep your fingers crossed for me

I'm reading The Cherry Tree at the moment, think I must have missed that one in the past. Derek was saying how they had to get used to the damp conditions living so close to the sea with fungus on the wall behind the settee and unused clothes and shoes with mildew, along with slugs inside the cottage. When we moved to Exmoor it was in December and a very wet winter. It was a 30s bungalow not a granite cottage but I soon discovered that my jumpers were smelling musty as they were on shelves with an outside wall and my shoes that were in their cardboard boxes were going white and the boxes were damp. We also had problems with the walls in our bedroom turning black. This was quite a shock for me coming from a completely dry house in Herts. It turned out that there was a leaking water pipe going under our bedroom providing the water to the kitchen so we got that sorted. We also discovered that there weren't any real foundations at the front, it was just built on the shale with no damp course. We found a mould and mildew spray which removed the black from the walls as if by magic but we did have to repeat that. On talking to the locals it seems that most of the homes on Exmoor have a damp problem unless you keep the heating almost permanently on and/or the windows open for ventilation. We didn't have the snails though! There was an old cottage on Dartmoor when I used to go on riding holidays there, that was called Snaily House as there were so many snails inside. Not sure if that was when people were living in it or just when it was empty, it was obviously a good local story.
