View Full Version : Scared little mouse

I came into the kitchen this morning from the garden and found a beautiful little field mouse on the floor. It was just laying there very still and I was able to pick it up whereupon it started wriggling so at least it was alive and kicking. I suspect Gheera as she was sitting looking innocent in the doorway! The poor little thing was probably in shock. I took it to the bank between our garden and next door and placed it under a shrub. It did move away so physically ok but it stayed in sight, just laying there in the shade so I hope it recovered.
Glorious day which I hope it's been for everyone.

My nephew loved being in P.Z. and if anyone should see a racing boat with an orange nose in tomorrows race that would be one he wrapped. Will be watching Spotlight. He got sunburnt and didn't have time to visit his Aunty as he had to get back to Bucks. But wants to bring his bike down to ride it. So another family Cornwall fan. Not difficult - one visit and most are hooked.

Jane hope the little field mouse got away and he was just lying low till the coast was clear. Last summer Katy carefully carried home tiny field mice and never harmed them but they would play dead till rescued by us. Cannot see Katy wandering off on daring adventures this year as she is having a hard job getting over a rather unfriendly (not to humans) cat who lived next door. Cat has now moved but the scars remain for poor little Katy. But the mice will be safe and Katy too as she remains mostly close to home garden these days.
What glorious weather we are having at the moment!! :high5:

we got a little rodent plastic cage from Tesco and put tissue paper in it so that any mice arriving unexpectedly via cat can be rescued and kept quiet and warm until they get over the shock and can be released later out of sight of said hunters!
Have rescued many that seemed dead until I warmed them up on a hot water bottle and then was able to let them go later.
..its the warm season now so shall be very busy over the next few months with lizard/bird/ mouse/vole/shrew/mole/water vole rescue.... one of our cats actually left a large dead rat for us the other day...yuk! I would still like to know which of them it is as thats a rare cat!

You're more generous than I am Linda........I would be shooing it out of the door I'm afraid......I cannot be around mice and rats on the floor........or frogs!!
Which reminds me I gently pulled at some dead fern strands that have toppled into the pond, good job I did it gently, as a little head popped up and I was face to face with a stern looking frog........so I left them as they are, must be frog spawn in there and will wait until all the froglets are grown and jumping around......the pond will look a sight by then!!

We do not have a pond but a large bed of ivy which is home to an assortment in sizes of frogs of which send me scuttling away speed of light!
Katy's game is to extract a frog from the ivy where is sits motionless on the garden. I then have the task of sending it back home usually with a cane just edging the frog along on his way. The frog emits a sort of scream then leaps off home. Now wondering if my frog is in fact a toad. It is large orange in colour with slanting eyes. Not a pretty sight is he hence my fear.
I believe there to be many more frogs/toads lurking in the undergrowth around the garden making weeding and any other gardening pursuits a nightmare!

You have to be careful of dogs picking up toads as they can cause serious problems for dogs and some have died, so maybe better if Katy didn't pick her friend up......why I am so divvy about frogs and small rodents I don't know. But then, I don't mind spiders.

now you have me there Gloria as I cannot abide spiders, really cannot abide them,....having said that today I saw a big crawling across the floor and felt I shouldnt kill it so I actually managed to get kitchen rolll and pick it up in that and threw it out of the window....
funny as a child I didnt mind them at all and the bigger they were the better, I would let them crawl over my hands etc...was even called into one of the bedrooms to sort a very large one out when I was away with the Girls Brigade...as young girl that was...

I think you already know my aversion to rodents of any kind, and spiders too, but I am always happy to see frogs and toads in my garden, not least because they like to feast on slugs and snails. Haven't seen too many slugs around so far, but the snails are out in force once again and it has become a twice daily chore to go round the garden collecting them on a shovel then flinging them over the hedge into the hen pen at the bottom of the garden! There are lots of lush weeds over there, so I reckon they can feast on them and leave my sweet peas and veg plants alone.

I'm with you Linda ~ I can happily handle mice and frogs but no way would I go near a spider. I wouldn't have a problem with rats either apart from being afraid of being bitten and catching something nasty. The thought of letting a spider crawl on my hands ~ yuk.................. At Watchet near where we used to live there is a Tourist Attraction "Tropiquaria" amd they have tarantulas. Now I could look at it while the keeper held it in her hands but no way could I hold it myself even though it was more like an animal as it was so large. She said that you had to be careful in holding it as if you dropped it and it fell to the ground you could kill it. Even if I managed to hold it I'm sure I would suddenly want to get rid of it so that was my excuse for not trying.

I've now noticed a spider on the wall near the computer ~ aah.....................and the bed by the wall is full of paperwork so hope I don't suddenly discover it when I least expect it!

We didn't see anything on Spotlight about the Power Boats in PZ unless we missed it. It was all about Devon County Show ~ what wonderful weather they're having ~ just glad I'm not competing in this heat.
We didn't go down to The Prom today but could hear the music and loud speakers. We're going to have a look tomorrow so will look out for the orange nose!

Will be interested to hear if you did see any of the power boat racing Jane. We haven't ventured out to do anything Cornish thus far. Eddie has been working, working, working!! Now has the utility room and the cloakroom tiled and most of the painting done. Annoyingly he had to re-do the front bedroom ceiling where the leak came through and has yet to re-do the little bedroom ceiling.
So Linda in me you have a fellow GLB girl.........what a wonderful uniform!! my Mum fell about laughing when she saw the beret I had to wear. She said the uniform material was like dish-cloth, but then she was a dressmaker and was used to choosing what she worked with. Recently I read in our local newspaper that one of our leaders had passed away - obviously now an elderly lady, but I suspect from the obit that she had alzeheimers which is very sad. She was a very sweet person and a strict Baptist.

I loved being in GB...and I liked being different to Girl GUides! we did performances in our light blue tabard type dresses doing not sure what you call it now as I cant remember but that sort of dance movement rather than pe /gymnastics, a bit like the stuff in between the war years....anyhow we used to compete and we won a few times..I loved it.

We took a stroll down to the Prom and got there about 11.15am with a race in progress. Another glorious day, it was just lovely down there. The racing was quite far out so couldn't tell if there was a boat with an orange nose! Some of them were really flying out of the water when they hit a wave. I took a few photos which have come out better than I thought as had to use the zoom. I'll post some tomorrow. There were less spectators than I expected but it only started at 11am. We could hear the music from home in the afternoon so probably it was busier then. We walked back home through Morrab Gardens which were lovely.
Glad all progressing well at Bryher Gloria. Have you finished with the builders now?

Not entirely finished........a door to unblock and a patio to rebuild.....a broken toilet seat that I doubt anyone will own up to even though it happened while we were not here. Looks like someone stood on it to inspect the fan above the toilet. Remind you of anything???? perhaps the suddenly found to be broken kitchen sink which won't be replaced for a few more weeks.
Will look out for the photos Jane.

I've put some photos in my album of the Powerboat racing. Another VERY hot day ~ wonderful when you don't have to work in it.

It's been another glorious day here too, Jane, although I believe it will turn cooler from tomorrow. Still, at least it was lovely for the weekend so the workers could enjoy it too. It used to infuriate me when I was working and it would be wet on Saturday/Sunday, then beautiful when I was stuck back in my industrial windowless shed on Monday!!
Just off to look at your powerboat pics now.
