Oh those forecasters got it so right! All yesterday evening, overnight and this morning too the rain has been pelting down non-stop, and it's now quite windy and chilly too. Watching the forecast last night, it appears that our part of the country is going to be worst hit, both today and tomorrow, so hope it is better for the rest of you, wherever you are!
What rotten luck for our Carnival organisers, they must be so fed up since we have had a lovely week up to now. Hope they have made some provision indoors for the crowning of the Queen - it is usually done in the middle of a big playing field!!

How very frustrating our weather is, no wonder we're always accused of talking about it. Sennen beach was at least dry at 7.30am 2.5 hours after high water with some lovely waves but lots of dark clouds. Plenty of time for everything to change once more before your holiday Kath. It was still 10c overnight and is still warm now but has been drizzling for a while now.

Today has not been quite as wet as yesterday, although still had some fairly hefty downpours at times, but it has been so cold!!! At one point this afternoon our weather station was showing an outside temperature of just 8.6 degrees! :feminist: When you consider that it is the longest day in just two weeks time, that is just ridiculous. I have even put the heating on for an hour this evening.
Hope it is better than this next week!! Don't really want to have to pack winter woollies. :(

We put the heating on here yesterday evening - although we only have a few rads now as they were either taken down when we had the floods or are old and barely working. We boosted the lounge with the convector heater, but I still sat with my coat round my legs. Non too warm tonight either.
Will this wonderous Summer we are supposed to enjoy ever get started?:flood:

Well, it started here last week, Gloria, but came to an abrupt end on Friday evening! Just hope that wasn't the sum total of it!! :(
It is much better here this morning - sunny so far but still not too warm.

It's just occurred to me why we have had such a lousy weekend - my peonies were in full flower last week, looking absolutely glorious, and now they are on the ground, totally battered to bits! It happens every time!!!

Fortunately Kath my peonies are still in bud although not quite upright. Which reminds to get out into the wilderness and have a go at sorting it all out. Second thoughts nice for the wildlife so may leave it as it is!

Pouring here today and chilly with the forecast not promising either for the rest of the week but that should be hopeful for you Kath as it can all change back to sunshine for the weekend onwards.
We don't have any peonies but when we did years ago they always semed to get bashed down by rain. At least the rain should be good for most of the plants as long as it isn't too heavy and then we want SUNSHINE...............:clock:
this smilie has nothing whatsoever to do with my post but I did like it! We used to have a cuckoo clock and occasionaly a B&B guest would stop it if it was annoying them as one the the bedrooms was close by, trouble was they used to restart it in the morning and move the hands to the correct time and you shouldn't do that but wait until the time the clock shows has arrived and just push the pendulum otherwise eventually you damage the wires. All good fun....

The BBC forecast for next week is looking quite promising, Jane, so am keeping everything firmly crossed! I'd just been looking at the Cornwall webcams site and seen that Mounts Bay was very wet and misty.
I have a friend who is down in Devon and Cornwall this week, then going to stay with friends outside Bath next week. I did warn Anne that she should reverse the order and be down in Cornwall next week to get the best weather!! She and her husband were intending to make for Exeter for an overnight stop on Saturday - hope they decided against it in the end, otherwise they could have got caught up in all that flooding in the area.
Have been logged on to the Bosun's Locker site this morning checking the inventory to remind myself what we need to take with us. There is a growing stack of items in the spare room of things to be packed - the adrenalin rush is starting to kick in now and I am getting quite excited. :crazy_pilot:

No Peonies here either, I had one in our second home after we were married which we left behind as it was such a big plant and then I could never grow them again. Maybe I should have another go here, although to have them bashed down in rain isn't much fun. Still have some plants to put out but not too many and had hoped to get the job finished today but the weather saw that idea go down the drain.
I'm going to take a look at the Bosuns Locker. Can well understand your excitement Kath it never fails to give me a thrill when I know we are on our way here.

My dad always used to tell me that once a peony was established it should never be moved or it would die - well, mine hasn't heard that story obviously because it has been moved three times and each time, after a year of sulking, has bounced back healthy and full of blooms!
It would appear that I can't grow camellias, but I CAN grow peonies!

I was quite glad first of all to see the rain - our garden was getting desperate for a good soaking. But we're coming up to our first evening at the Minack this Thursday, so I'm not so sure now. It was only a week ago we were still sitting out in the garden eating tapas with friends at 10pm, but if Thursday is anything like tonight, we'll need to have our full winter gear on. Whatever it's like though, we'll try to give you all a wave.

Sure hope it's better by Thursday, we only have one warm room in Bryher. The Lounge is so open and without warmth, if we sit there in the evening I need to wear my coat!! Would definitely dress for Winter if it doesn't improve.
Will look out for the wave. My sunburn of last week has been taken over by being chilled this week. Still Kath will be here soon so it HAS to get better.

Well it's 7.3 degrees here in Melbourne at 10.30 am with rain squalls and hail. Supposed to get to around 11C. Though it's not much more than that in here right now, so this is brought to you from my bed with the EB on 9!!!!! Our heating is on the blink...3rd year in a row! I am NOT a happy camper right now :(
Kath I couldn't believe how peonies grew when I saw them last year...took quite a few pics 'cos I think they're wonderful No-one grows them here...don't know why...or maybe it's that I've never seen them....One house I lived in about 8 years ago, had a beautiful pale pink one just outside the back door. It grew such big beautiful blooms....so they do grow here.

The difference is though, Gloria, that it is winter in Melbourne, so Jen would expect to have her heating on - here it is supposed to be the start of summer, and I DON'T expect to have my heating on in June! Am trying to resist the temptation to put it on again tonight - so far have just put a thick cardigan on instead.
Forecast has just shown prospects of it getting warmer again this coming weekend though - here's hoping!!
Doesn't look too good for Janet up in Alnmouth tomorrow, she may need her waterproofs and fleece after all.

Just in case anyone reads anything in the papers or online about the flooding in Sheffield and North Derbyshire yesterday - it is over the other side of the Pennines and didn't affect us I am glad to say. We had some rain last night but none of the extreme thunderstorms that were affecting many other parts.
Hope everyone else escaped unscathed too.

Lucky you with your nice summer's day, Gilly. It is very humid and sultry up here today, with some fairly heavy showers, so not too pleasant.

Lovely sunny day here again today, so am off out now to cut the grass, and hopefully make a start on digging out the weeds and a vicious bramble which seems to be staging a takeover bid! Might just change out my strappy vest top before tackling that one though!! Temperature reached 27C in our back garden yesterday afternoon, so need to get the heavy work done this morning, then hopefully I can get the lounger out and relax with a book later.;) That's if I can tear myself away from Wimbledon!! Really hoping for another Federer win this year. I know I should be supporting Andy Murray but I really don't like him, sorry!

Dare I say I am hoping for Federer win at Wimbledon too Kath. Such a great player and gentleman.
Lovely and warm here today although breezy. Sitting outside watching Katy on the fence and looking at the garden ~ ah well the weeds look lovely! We have an abundance of overhanging trees which need cutting back as they are taking light from the flowers and shrubs. Gardening books say to leave the pruning of trees to the experts ~ any expects out there with advise?

Sounds very much like mine then, Linda!! The grass is now cut down to size but looks more like a brown patch of dead thatch interspersed with patches of dandelions and buttercups - certainly couldn't call it a lawn! It will be getting a weed, feed and moss kill treatment over the weekend, but really and truly I think it is beyond redemption and needs to be dug up and replaced. As for the weeds in the garden, I need a strong-armed man to tackle the problem!! Since I don't have one of those around, I shall just have to tackle it bit by bit myself - could take me the rest of the summer!!

Hope your dog is ok Linda. Our labrador is poorly at the moment. He has had xrays and been hospitalised. It seems he has hip dysplasia and severe arthritis so he is now on a maximum dosage of tramadol and metacam.
He has been much happier for the last week but seems down in the dumps today and his temperature is up so back to the vets later :(
They are such a worry.
gloria townsin
26th June 2009, 12:25 PM
When they take Metacam or Rimadyl (which my vet prefers to give as it's a bit safer) they Must eat.......if they don't eat or vomit then you shouldn't give it. Sometimes vets forget to say this and it causes all sorts of problems. Hope both dogs are better soon......what a worry they are.

Hi Gloria, our lab is really off his food so I am getting him to eat little bits and pieces every half hour, its mainly raw minced beef and markie biscuits. We have two other labs and it really helps encourage them to eat by competing with each other.
The metacam does seem to suit him thank goodness. We were worried about the high dose of tramadol (8 a day) but apparantly its very safe.
Well the rain has arrived and we have just had a real downpour, everything looks refreshed and no watering to do later :)

Lulu isnt eating anything really. She will drink some milk and tonight I put a spoonful of Build up in it ut had to encourage her for fifteen minutes to drink approx a half a cup. She ate some digestives last night about two...today no thanks..and she has been this way for over a week now...vet doesnt know whats wrong. We had two kinds of tablets including Rimadyl and she vomited even as we tried to get them down...so he said dont.
Dont think this is going to get resolved before I go and I am worried...she does however seem fairly ok in some ways she went out tonight for a walk adn ran round the field and lay down and rolled about in the grass. Its so strange!...I know she isnt right but cant put my figer on it. Have emailed the 'vet' and he hasnt replied. Asked for him to Xray her. I am there tomorrow as I have to take one cat for his monthly jab and one cat for a second vaccine. So we'll see if he gets nasty with me...as he can.
I was out in teh garden tonight Kath and juts cant believe how we have let teh garden get away as it has...its an utter mess! A month of Sundays wouldnt do it.
I didnt like to say about Murray and I am glad you have said it...he is arrogant and I think a not very nice person at all. JUst love smooth Federer, so nice!

Linda won't she eat something smelly like sardines.....? Mashed up sardines in oil and carnation milk provide all they need......I had to give this to Faith when she was so ill. Or how about what I feed mine.....don't throw your hands up in horror.......raw chicken wings........Faith at her illest would eat them and nothing else, the sardine mix I had to spoon down her, the chicken wings she ate. Obviously don't cook them feed them raw. I hesitated to mention them before because I do wonder if she has a blockage and the only way you'll know is if she's opened up, which obviously you don't want to do willy nilly. Maybe try her with just one, Tesco's do them really cheap. My Shih Tzu eat them so a dog of her size will make nothing of them. In fact I've had tiny pups gumming them.......they are good if a dog has the runs as they create a firmer stool....sorry if you're eating your tea. I really hope for some good news of both dogs, please let me know I have a passion for listening to dog stories. Don't know why your vet would be unpleasant to you Linda, you are only trying to look after your dog to your best ability. I would suggest bloat but I would have thought that would have been diagnosed, big dogs do suffer from it though. They try to vomit but can't the stomach is distended .... she should be eating the only other reason I could think of is a phantom pregnancy but if she is spayed that shouldn't be the case.

So sorry to read about poorly cats and dogs. I do understand how worrying this is, as I just go to pieces if ever Tia (cat) is unwell.
Last week, had to go to the Vet as Tia had symptoms of cystitis again. Fortunately, two injections seem to have sorted it out, but always have fingers crossed.
While at the surgery, she was weighed. Last time, I was told she was overweight at 4.5 kilos. This time, as she was picked up and carried to the scales, I proudly said that she should be lighter as she is eating far less food, by choice, now it is Summer. Was I proved wrong!!! She now weighs 5+ kilos and I have strict instructions to cut down her food - again. She is now on just one satchet of Whiskas Senior a day (before she was on two), plus a small amount of Purina dried food, and isn't very happy about it at all.

Well I went to the vet this am with the two other cats and on arriving he said didnt you get my message? I sid no, he said well I left one for you on your answer phone didnt you get it? I said No I have been collecting a cat. (It turns out teh message he left was last night but we never saw it...and all he said was its **** and I have the results of the blood tests. ). Did you bring her with you. No I said... Well he said Its not good news. She has advanced kidney disease. She not very well and its not looking good. I just stood there. He showed me teh blood counts and the crea and creatine and another opne I cant recall teh name of were way high in teh several hundred. They should be in teh 3-10 or up to 50 count. Can you bring her in on Monday and we will hydrate her and I will do a urine test to see if she is concentrating urine. If she is or isnt and at that point I cant now remember what he said. I was in shock. I said what are we looking at days, weeks months, he wouldnt answer. What can we do ...he said if she starts eating we can use diet etc....if not then.....its not good. I told him I was off to Canada and was worried about how Jeff would manage as he dotes on her. No response from him. After taking this other cat to the lady I had collected it from and getting home I told Jeff...he too was shocked. I decided to ring *** again and asked why are we not bringing her down down to get hydrated today and get the toxins out. He said theres no point in the course of the disease and in any case I can concentrate better on Monday....you asked me why I dread visiting this vet. (Of course it will make a b***** difference...she wont be continuing to build up the toxins you stupid b*****) the latter I wanted to say. This is the man who wouldnt come out when I had a cat dying as he was having a spcial meal with his family that night because they were all going away. He was shocked when he saw the cat next morning. I am so angry at this man....we take four of the cats to the mainland now. He said its because of leptosporisis....I looked it up and yes it could be ...it could also be her age and she is a big dog. either way, her symptoms have puzzled him because she is not having the symptoms he keeps asking about...like drinking more, urinating more, yes she wont eat, yes she has had a tremble for a short period and yes she has missed her footing in the last few weeks. The brightest thing today was that I got her to eat some scrambled egg in milk, not much but a spoonful or two...and then she has eaten nearly half a tin of corned beef!!! Jeff was having a sandwich and she came in as she always does and he tried a bit and she ate it! So he shouted me and I brought in the rest of the tin and gave her little bits and she ate them! So we take her in Monday and we see what happens. I hope and prayer that she will pull round this time and that she is good while I am away....more for Jeff than me....thank God he is off and able to be at home with her...and that we can use diet and whatever else and that she can have a while longer...I hope more than months. The way **** was talking this am I thought he was saying days or weeks.I hope he is wrong.

Linda I am truly sorry you haven't got a better report on Lulu, as you say the sooner treatment begins the better in every kind of illness situation. Has she vaccinated for Lepto? I know my vet thinks this needs to be done every three months for working dogs, ie. those that hunt, run where there are rats ......... Do you use Advocate as a wormer as slugs and snails are causing a lot of illnesses in dogs now due to our changing climate. I use it every three months. Is her urine very concentrated? It all seems a bit of a loose diagnosis but almost as bad is the vet's attitude. He would have something to be stroppy about if you weren't caring for your animals. I hope there will be a good outcome, always happens when you are about to do something - it's called 'someone's' law!!

Oh Linda, I'm so sorry to hear about your dog. What a horrible Vet to have, you can do without his attitude when you're already worrying about your animals. Do so hope she improves especially with you going away.

27th June 2009, 09:16 PM
I hate to admit I didnt even know about lepto....and I read now that you can vaccinate but its about twice a year and 30% of dogs dont benefit...even so why didnt he tell us about it? living where we do...I am not blaming him for this as we shoud have been more responsible ...thats how I am feeling...my initial reation was its our fault havign all those cats...and he did say no its not teh cats that have done it its the rodents....he thought she would have eaten one but we know she wouldnt...I do feel however, that a decent vet would give more advice than he does...you have to know the answers and the questions before you see him and then tread on eggshells when you ask, when you talk to anyone on this island there's hardly a person who will speak well of him.. ... am pleased to report Lulu has eaten a beef burger tonight...and with relish...I have been doing Reiki with her.....I am just about to cook another two so she can eat another tonight and save the rest for tomorrow...I wonder if she has understood what I have been telling her today....at present I wish I wasnt going to Canada....gotta go thank you everyone....wish we were all near one another

Hi Linda
please don't think I'm Nelly Knowall.........my trouble is I delve too much into whatever I'm doing and need to know all the possiblities and their answers.
Lepto is caught......not sure that's the right terminology.....via rat's urine. People can get it, sometimes it's called 'Weill's Disease', again from contact with contaminated places, swimming in stagnant water or in fact in any water that a rat might have got into. So farm dogs are especially suceptible. People who use their Terriers to catch rats are the ones who will vaccinate every three months, or should. I vaccinate one yearly with the usual booster, but it would be twice yearly if I had them around a yard. Thing is rats are everywhere, whether we like it or not we are living with them. Yes your vet. should have advised you she needed to be vaccinated against it knowing your lifestyle, he would have known the possibility of her getting it. I doubt she's eaten a rat......more likely, if she has it, she's caught it from just being where they have been.
To tell the truth........and I don't know if this is any comfort or not.......I don't think she would have lasted this long if she had Lepto full pelt. My Nephew's Dalmation died in hours from it, he caught it from the kennels they had put him in........probably a rat had been in the water bowl......who knows, but he didn't last long. Try and keep her hydrated and don't be afraid of your vet when you see him, ask him the questions you want an answer to. I would write down all you can think of and take it with you and tick off the answers he gives, it's sometimes difficult to remember it all when you are anxious. I hope Lulu will have eaten again and don't get too despondent, you can't know everything.......although I wish I did, would save me so much angst!!.......I'm sure, in fact I know, there are things you know that I have no idea about. Things happen - it's called life!! And we often ask the question - Why?
She's got lots of good vibes coming from The Redhall bunch and Ambrose wishes to you All.
Linda

Aaw! Gloria I had tears in my eyes after I read your post. I do try so hard to read up but somehow I missed this and am kicking myself...but as you say its life and its about knowing the answers before you can ask the questions!
She has eaten another two thirds of a burger today after I warmed it up...yes properly! :)....so at least this is I hope a good sign that she wants to live and wants to fight...and she has'nt given up and the disease hasnt got the better of her.
Thank you Kath, just knowing people are with you helps a lot.
Guess what! I have just come back from the vet...yep! had to go down again! This time a cat...a little Theo boy ..laying on the yard and not moving, picking up he goes limp, breathing very heavy and eratic...oops! panic mode sets in this isnt right. PHone vet.... could I take him down at 4pm...(its 2.30), Margo says, thats his wife, she has just been treated for cancer and has come through, she is very kind lady .....softens the sharp edge of him!.....I say nothing just repeat what condition the cat is in, twice more. I dont think an hour will make any differencce she says. I am thinking on your head be it. Finally, OK she says and agrees I can go down now...will take me half hour to get there...want to know the reason for the delay? So he can play in his Pipe Band of which he is the Master Piper....and it finishes at 4. I get there , having told Jeff before I left that this time I WILL do the evil deed.....if he responds the wrong way...Margo was there and he was ina foul mood but the lid was on. Three injections for the cat, agrees he is breathing very heavy and very hot. Morphine, antibiotic and something else...ask what causes this breathing, could be an allergy was the reply. Your bringing the dog down tomorrow, not even Lulu, but the dog! yes I say, well bring this ne too and I will check him again. What does that mean I ask myself is this injections to tide him over...you too wouldnt ask anymore when a)you can see a face that looks like teh devil incarnate and b) you dont get any info anyhow! SO I said to Jeff when I got back..its as if I am not meant to go to Canada...like me he too thought I wasnt bringing little Theo back today. He is now ona seat in teh sun room and sleeping. I have no idea whats wrong, he didnt move a muscle in the car and stayed where I put him all the way there. and we have a cat missing at present for the last three nights...so I am now off out searching as I have done for the last three days....see you in a bit! :)

Oh Linda, what can I say? I am just so very sorry that all these horrible things are happening to you right now when you should be looking forward to your trip to Canada. Poor little Theo, I do hope the injections work for him, and hope that you find your missing cat safe and well too. :(

This is always the problem with animals and the reason I didn't get to Cornwall for years, in that time missing the chance to meet Derek and Jeannie. They seem to know when you are about to do anything out of the ordinary and throw wobblies all over the place.
Sounds as though he might have given meds to keep him on an even keel and will go into it more tomorrow. This wouldn't satisfy me either.......if Jackie hadn't operated on Faith that Sunday she wouldn't have been around for a Monday visit. Diagnosis, in my mind, is the most important part of any treatment........without it there's no way of telling if the meds are correct.
I hope Lulu keeps eating and the kitty is o.k. Are you feeling the 'ties that bind' getting tighter Linda? :fie:
If I was nearby I'd offer help and hand-holding.......

OMG...this creature has the audacity to call itself a VET? :mad2: We had a similar problem locally...NOT any more! Mr grumpy was told to go out & come back in when he could act in a professional manner and treat me & my dog in a civilised fashion....after all I was paying him!
And the moron that calls itself a vet should have told you to not give anything with salt or added salt if he thought is was a kidney problem. How bluddy irresponsible.
OMG....let me at him :mad2:
I hope Lulu is getting better Linda (((((HUGS)))))

How is Lulu Linda? Also your cats, do hope you've found the missing one and the other is recovering. Must be a very worrying time for you both.

I've been wondering as well how things are. Just hoping that the treatments are working.

Me too. Just hoping that silence doesn't mean that things are not going well.

Maybe Linda is juggling the animals and sorting out what she needs to take and do before her Canada break.
But I do wonder if she is bogged down with vet visits and meds.
Speaking of Canada, come in Brenda.......we need to hear from you and surely Steve must be back now........love to know how your visit went.
