View Full Version : Weather reports!

Given that there is quite a discussion about weather I thought that in a lighthearted way a section for weather reports might be interesting!

I am hoping that Jane may be a regular poster for West Penwith, Gloria can then do the Lizard when she moves down :) ....if we could get a friend I have who lives in Padstow to join she could do North Cornwall area round there....John you could cover a more local base of the Lamorna area.

Just look at our membership...it really can cover quite a global area... :)

Hope you agree.

Perhaps some photos of extreme weather would be fun too...so have set up a section for that as well.

Good idea,Linda.

Lovely and sunny and around 18c here today..and the best thing,no wind! We have a unique geographical situation here and our position to the east the Rock Mountains means that we do get a lot of strong westerly winds. They are called Chinook Winds and in winter they bring us warm,Pacific air and relief from the cold weather which is okay but we can do without them in spring and summer.

Our proximity to the eastern slopes of the Rockies also means that we receive very little precipitation, either snow or rain.We are classed as a semi-arid desert and it is not uncommon for us to go months with little or no rain(it all falls on the eastern slopes of the Rockies).
In summertime we spend hours each day watering the lawns and gardens, nothing would grow without us doing that.We have underground sprinklers that are computer-controlled to irrigate the grass and flower beds.
As warm as it is though we still get frost at night and nobody plants out annuals or vegetable crops until the second week in May,the date which is considered the last chance of frost.

well that is completely different from what I thought it was like for you..I had visions of green grass, rain, snow, hot sun and lots of lush greenery! Just shows how wrong you can be.

Very interesting and informative and now I want to find out more..met office first stop...

Steve, is that what you're used to? - months without rain.....semi arid desert..... have to have underground sprinklers in the garden........oh dear.... it might take you just a little while to get acclimatised here in Lamorna!

Steve's originally from my neck of the woods, Stockport, John, in which case he should have no problems at all getting used to rain, rain and more rain!!!!

We've got our own gardening team, and now our own weather reporters from around the globe. I am already enjoying the posts on this section. I think most of us will have something to say on this subject!!!

I reckon it will make for some very interesting photos too.

At present I only know it was marvellous weather in Mullion last week. A friend was there staying at the Cove Hotel, she took a trip down the lane to see our bungalow and the work going on and said the weather had been absolutely fantastic. I am especially glad they had a good break as they have some tough times to go through with their son who is terminally ill, poor chap and only in his 40's.

While I am hoping for good weather on the whole for our Sennen visit, secretly I am also wishing we could have one really wild day so that I can experience the waves crashing up right in front of the cottage! And if we do, you can be sure that I shall be there with camera poised!!

As kath says,I am Stockport born and bred so the weather in Lamorna will not worry me one little bit,John.
In fact I look forward to and relish walking in the rain, the wetter the better for me!!
If it rains around here it is a major talking point and weather forecasters point to the mere possibility of a drop of rain with joy and anticipation!

I'm sure you won't be dissapointed Steve at some point in your Magazine stay. Bet you are getting more thrilled at the prospect of spending time there as the days tick by. Lamorna is a lovely part of Cornwall - when I first read the Chronicles I thought the name Lamorna sounded more like a person, a young girl perhaps, from years ago rather than a place. Bit like someone wistfully beautiful, with a mysterious past. :D But then in a way that describes a lot about Lamorna and the surrounding countryside.

You are so right,Gloria. Thought about calling our new filly,Lamorna but Rosie suits her much better!
If you will be in Bryher in late April,mMay I could give you a call, perhaps?

Will check our phone there is back on and will let you have the number if all o.k. We will be there and back a few times, more there than not I hope, so will be pleased to let you know. Probably going down early next week all being well.
I guess if you had called your filly Lamorna, you would have been shouting 'Morna' across the fields to bring her in. One of our Connies was called Spinway Crusader and his name had been shortened to Sada by his breeder. Another of ours was registered as Bardsey Choice who had been bred on the Bardsey Island by Jane Strick, she used to breed Lundy Ponies at one time. To get the Connemara's to the main land when they were sold she used to stand them in a small boat and travel them over. I couldn't believe a pony would just stand in a small boat without panic, but Connies do, they are very level headed and kind. Had so many super equines through the years, never regretted a day spent with them rain, hail or shine.
I used to love calling them in from the field, they would all be grazing and if they hadn't seen me coming to get them I would stand at the field gate and shout C'mon, their heads would go up and depending on the time of year, they would begin to wend their way towards me. Slowly, until someone broke ranks and began to canter then they would all begin to pick up speed -'Me First'.......beautiful babes and wonderful days.

It seems we only had a very short spring over here this year which lasted just about two weeks as today it seems to be summer already. Sunshine and blue sky all day and 27°C!
All the buds seem to have burst open over night, so I had a tour of Villa Hügel Gardens today to take some photographs.
The heat seems to have been too much though for some of the daffodils which had only just opened a few days ago and had now just collapsed.
Don't think the heat will last really though. The possibility of thunderstorms is forecast for Easter and cooler weather as from Monday.

Sounds like summer has certainly arrived in your neck of the woods,Sybille.

I am amazed that any horse or pony could stand up in a boat on the sea,Gloria.

I know what you mean about the horses coming when you call.I have already formed a bond with Merlin and Rosie and they trail around after me whenever I am in the pasture doing something and come a-running whenever they see me approach.

It's great!

Sunny and 16c today and no wind.A lovely Good Friday in Alberta.

Well lucky all you people who have had sunshine today because here it has been murky, chilly and damp, even downright wet, for most of the day! The only consolation is that it is supposed to be getting better over the weekend - it can't get much worse, that's for sure.

We've had our first rain this week for weeks and the garden really needed it - it's been mainly overnight, but our friends camping just up the road at Trevelloe got a bit of a soaking. Lovely and sunny all day today though and the blackthorn is out in masses in all the hedgerows - should be a good autumn for sloes if the blossom is anything to go by. We got that snow several weeks ago, and although it only lasted a day or so, it seems to have set things back about 3 weeks, but since that frosty patch this has been one of the loveliest Springs we've seen here.

I've been in Northampton most of the day and the weather hasn't been too brilliant there. Rain on my way up and drizzle on the way back. The kind that isn't enough to keep the windscreen wipers going but needs you to keep switching them on and off....but heard on the radio that it had been good in the West and should be good again Sunday.
Drizzly here tonight in Herts. - the problem I have with rain Janet is once it starts it just doesn't leave off and I'm not great with constantly hearing rain on the conservatory roof (biggest put off with a conservatory we've discovered!). So as long as the supply is switched off every now and then I'll be quite happy to put up with it. :D

There was an electric storm in Norwich last night. Whilst looking for Katy through the bedroom window at 10pm I spotted a white bird flying across the sky silhoutteted by a flash of lightening. I presume the bird was an owl? Such a wonderful nature moment and one to share.
Katy fur baby evenually came bolting through the door at 11.30pm when the rain started!
A quiter day today dull but dry (at the moment).

Conjours up an amazing image Gilly......but what atrocious weather. You're glad to be safe inside with your furry friends when it's like this.

Pretty foul here too now. It managed to stay dry while I was out this morning, but got soaked this afternoon when I went out for my much-needed neck and shoulder massage. I think I may be in some pain tonight!!!:fie: Will it be painkillers, ..... or a glass of wine ...... hmmm, think the wine might win!!

That bird silhouetted against the lightning flash sounds an impressive sight, Gilly. Our pair of bats were swooping around for a couple of hours last night - usually we only see them for a few minutes. Don't know if I have upset their routine because I had half of my jungle stripped out yesterday so lots of the overgrown shrubs and ivy have now gone.
