I lived in Portugal for a few years but I used to get very upset at the amount of hunting & killing of wildlife that went on there ( anything that has fur, feathers etc)..
and Ive always taken interest in the survival of the Lynx in Portugal. There used to be quite a sizeable population in the Algarve but gradually their habitat has been eroded...until there is only a small population left.
But Ive recently had good news from Algarve. A reservation is being set up near the baragem (reservoir), just a short distance from the old Moorish capital Silves.
Once we sell this place, we are hoping to move back to Algarve, possibly Silves..its my dearest wish to see one of these creatures in the wild. I don't know whether Ill ever get that wish but just to know that they are going to be helped to survive is good enough for me :)
Try this link to see some footage of the Iberian Lynx:

You're very welcome Gloria :)

Saw a docu the other evening of a cork forest area in the Alentejo Portugal. It was nice to see a Portuguese landowner so interested in the preservation of wildlife,,the only ones I knew, when we lived in Algarve, were always out hunting & shooting anything that moved! ....
There was a sighting of a pair of Lynx in that area, so fingers crossed they may breed.

Ellie, the lynx in Portugal is a beautiful animal! I found a photo online of a Canadian lynx, which is quite different in appearance. We have them in our area, but I've never seen one: http://www.whisperwood.net/pixnpgs/m/m3.html

Your Canadian lynx has got a gorgeous winter coat on, Brenda, that should really keep him snug in your harsh winters.

The Portuguese lynx, Ellie, is a very pretty animal - lovely markings.

since I adore cats of all walks...this is close to my heart...and so inspiring that other countries do care and want to help wildlife....(not that I think for a minute we have the edge on animal care as you all know from my moans... ;) )

will follow this with great interest and look forward to hearing more Ellie when you do get there...as you will still be a member of the forum even in teh ALgarve...we shall expect photos...perhaps even a webcam...???or am I being just a bit too pushy on that one...wish we could get a webcam for Minack......

Talking catwise.........there are some beautiful cats looking for good homes on 'Many Tears' rescue site. One an Ambrose double and another the sweetest kitten.........then the dogs looking for loving homes........oh my word!! A dear Shih Tzu male that has been used as a stud dog by puppy farmers and through, I would guess lack of care, is totally blind. He is so unused to being stroked he doesn't understand it at all. So sad.
