hello folks,

Having rediscovered the Chronicles after maybe 20 yrs I nostalgically browsed the web for Minack and found you great group of like minded people. I began reading Dereks books over 30 yrs ago and when I got married aged 25 my lovely wife and I honeymooned at a St Buryan rented cottage...we took the opportunity to write ahead to Derek and Jeannie and let them know how much we enjoyed his writings and that we would be passing Minack on the coastal path one fine day in April 1978...he wrote back and invited us to call by. On the day , a sunny day, we approached Minack but had decidednt invade their privacy unless we spotted one of them outside, Derek spotted us first and said they were expecting us !...they were wonderfully hospitable and we chatted with Derek on seats by the cottage, Jeannie made tea and produced a tray of cakes...bless her. We had actually brought them a piece of the wedding cake. Jeannie was mostly quiet and smiling but Derek was chatty and took us on little tour, its a long time ago now but I especially recall finding the donkeys in thier cool atmospheric stable where Derek related a story of psychic donkey happenings ...I guess he told the same story many times to visitors..lol. Derek took several photos with our new camera but he noticed the focus blurred after every shot..I told him not to worry and it was probably some feature I had not yet worked out,but alas it was a fault and I do not have a good record of the day. Of course it sadly transpired that Jeannie had but eight summers left with Derek from that April day and I lost my own wife in 2004 at 49 so I can partly imagine Dereks emptyness in his final decade. I live busily here in Lincoln and travel a lot but have not been back to Cornwall since 78...but maybe next March I will !
Look forward to reading everyones posts...Mark.

Hi, Mark,

What a great introduction of yourself! A nice story, your honeymoon, walk along the coastal path, and tea with Derek and Jeannie. Lucky you. Welcome to the forum and, as you said, finding such a great group of like-minded people. I can confirm with total impartiality that we are, indeed, great people.

Hope to hear more from you.

Brenda

Hello Mark, lovely to make your acquaintance via the forum. I too met Derek after approaching via the coastal path, but not Jeannie. It was in 1985, just when Jeannie had started to become ill, but Derek was charming and chatted away to my husband, daughters and myself, before sending us off to meet the donkeys.

I am sorry to hear that you lost your wife at such an early age; having lost my husband last year, I really can sympathise, but if you do feel able to join us at the AGM and Memorial Weekend next year, have no fears about coming alone. FOMS people are the most wonderful friendly group I have ever met and I can assure you that within a very short space of time you will feel amongst friends.

So, welcome aboard the forum and do feel free to join in any of the topics that take your fancy, or start your own. We always welcome a new viewpoint, either on the Chronicles, Cornwall or anything else that you may wish to post about.

Kath

Great to meet you Mark - I have posted a short message in another part of the forum to you. Your Minack story is very interesting and so good to hear a bit about Jeannie at a 'visitor's meeting'. So pleased you have found your way back to the Chronicles - I reckon you were meant to.
I hope you will enjoy all the aspects of the forum and join in the chat, there are some great people here and the 'Wavelength' thing seems to be amazingly efficient amongst us. (Perhaps 'Wavelength' brought you back to the Chronicles leading you to here :) Ahh.........now there's a thought! )
