Hello everyone, I'm Judy and I have just joined the forum after being a FOMS member since 2005. Our recent visit to the UK and particularly to Minack has prompted me to join up.
I first came across the Minack books in the early 1970's and loving the countryside and animals, especially cats I avidly read as many as I could find at the time. Sadly I never thought to try and meet Derek or Jeannie when I visited the UK in 1979. Then for a while family life was busy and Minack was temporarily forgotten until I happened to come across a copy of "A Cat in the Window". After reading it the joy and charm of Minack immediately came back to me so I set off to collect and now have read all of Derek's books and one of Jeannie's too. It's good to know that others too enjoy the simple pleasures of life as we do.
I am now retired so I have time to enjoy life and do the things I want to do. When we came to the UK in 2007 we made sure we visited Cornwall and Minack. We had a very pleasant afternoon visiting Mim and John and had a great time wandering both the coastal path and the inland route to Oliver Land. It was wonderful to see the cottage and the fields Derek had written so vividly about but it also felt a bit strange seeing the places for the first time that you feel you already know. I sat on Ambrose rock on the gorgeous sunny Autumn day and looked out to sea as I imagined Derek and Jeannie must have done many times. All that was needed was a cat or two to complete the picture.
Back in Australia my fond memories of Minack are ever present with one lovely shot of the cottage, bathed in sunshine having pride of place as our desktop image.
Now I hope to be able to come to a Memorial weekend one year and meet some more FOMS members.
