And we have joined the Forum today:) Apparently the 50th addition.

Sue is the one that has read all of the books over the last 10 years or so but we are both interested in visiting the place it all happened.

We live in Essex, and are embarking on our annual 2 week holiday starting tomorrow night with our 12 YO son Alex, hoping to arrive in Cornwall sometime during Saturday.

We are staying in Bude which is a long way from Minack as you would probably be aware. When we come down to visit we will start out early and make a day of it, perhaps including a trip to Land's End and with Linda's suggestion, Minack Theatre.

Are there any other places of interest that we may be able to fit into a day visit to Oliver Land?

Thanks, any general help of what to expect would be appreciated.

Thanks

Steve & Sue

Hello Steve and Sue, and welcome to the forum. Look forward to getting to know you both over the coming months.

Lucky you going off to Cornwall this weekend. I take it you will be taking the walk to Oliver Land? If so you should call in at the Lamorna Wink pub at Lamorna. Sue will recognise this as being where the donkeys escaped to on occasion! You should also visit Lamorna Pottery as there is a bookcase full of Minack books and memorabilia in the conservatory there.

Do you know Cornwall well? If not, you may be disappointed with Land's End, it is horribly commercialised these days. Another place worth a visit which may appeal to your son is the Seal Sanctuary at Gweek. I always try to fit in a visit there whenever I am down from Derbyshire. I sponsor one of the resident seals.

Hope you get some decent weather and look forward to hearing about your trip when you get back.

Hello Steve and Sue - so nice to meet you here in the land of Minack Chronicle fans. You will have an amazing time in Cornwall as it is such an amazing place so you cannot fail to love it all, though Lands End isn't as beautiful as it once was but there are so many other places to enjoy. We love the Lizard peninsular and as Kath said the Seal Sanctuary is a good place to visit, Gweek itself is very picturesque. Have a fabulous time and enjoy Oliver Land - make sure to come back and tell us all about your trip.

By the way Kath which seal do you sponsor - I have been thinking about being a sponsor. Anyway Well Done You it is a cause worth supporting. :D

Thank you for your replies, it looks like we'll give Land's End a miss and visit the seal sanctuary. I do hope the weather is better in Cornwall than it is here:(. Looking at the Minack Theatre webcams it does look very sunny this morning.

I am just scouring the internet to find things to do, I know I have left it rather late but there you are!

Thanks once again for your help.

We'll report back in a few weeks

Your son might enjoy the Poldark Mine, Steve, and if your wife is into jewellery, The Cornish Gold Centre near Portreath is well worth a visit (you might wish to relieve her of her credit card first though cos you can spend a fortune in there!!). Nearer to Bude, there is all the King Arthur legendary stuff at Tintagel, plus the Old Post Office there is worth a visit.

Have a great time.

I sponsor Lizzie, Gloria - for obvious reasons since I have a daughter Elizabeth! We used to sponsor Twiggy but she has sadly now died.

Kath's on the ball again!! Tintagel would be a great place to go and if you like 'Doc Martin' go to Port Isaac where it is filmed. To tell the truth there are so many places in Cornwall that you could visit - so have a good time and hope the weather is good for you. :D
