Hello Jill

I am new to this site as well. It is lovely to find like minded people to whom Minack means a lot to as well.

Look forward to chatting with you

Hi everyone!
I am Jill, I joined some time ago but a big family crisis pushed everything to back boiler.
I am 51, I live in Mid Wales and have been a Minack fan for about 24 years.
My first book was Lama, spotted in WH Smith, I was hooked!
I have most of the chronicles, some of them are signed, a personal postcard from Derek in reply to a letter. Two of Jeannie's books- Bertioni's Hotel and Meet me at the Savoy.
On a visit to Cornwall in 1999 I found a copy of Cry Havoc by Beverley Nichols, it is inscribed- "to Jean with love from Barbara and Mona.March 1934" I believe it was given to Jeannie for her birthday.
I will post again,
Bye for now
Jill

Hello Jill, nice to hear from you. The Beverly Nichols book could have been from Jeannie's sister, Barbara which would make it a very special find - well done.

Look forward to getting to know you better on the forum soon. Do keep posting when you get the chance, we are always very happy to hear new members views and opinions on all things to do with Minack, Cornwall, pets and life in general.

Hi Kath,
I am as sure as I can be that the book was given to Jeannie on her 17th birthday, March 1934, I have seen a reference to Mona in one of the books, I can't remember exactly who she was, not a family member, but close to the family, maybe involved with the care of Jeannie and Barbara.
I only paid five pounds for it, I don't think the inscription would mean anything unless you were familiar with the books.

what a terrific find Jill....and certainly one to treasure!

Hi Linda,
I always feel quite sad that I have the book instead of a relation of Jeannie or Barbara. It is so personal, and a real link to the three people in the inscription.
I know how I would feel if I was given something belonging to my dad that I did not know about.

...thats why I have kept my Dad's bird books, and even his RSPCA Inpector's cap and fishing flies he used to make!

...I often wonder why these things have left possession of the receiver...obvious for some reasons I know but even so why did the families not keep them....perhaps we just treasure these things as part of their memory and feel they deserve a place somewhere; some may think that this isn't necessary to their memory and i can go along with that too....but I am more of the former believer than teh latter...hence I am an absolute squirrel!

I've just received this morning a hard back copy of the Ambrose Rock which I won on ebay. This was signed by Derek but is an ex library book. I am sure he is unlikely to have signed copies specifically for a library so presumably someone must have donated it at some time. I can't imagine ever parting with any of my signed copies!!

(Had to laugh at the seller's address - Bad Bargain Lane in Yorkshire!!!!  Must say his service was excellent though)

Hi Jill
a belated welcome from us to the Forum. Read your post and the replies with interest - it never ceases to amaze me either as to what people will let go that you'd think would be a treasured family item. Maybe we're both too sentimental - well Mim certainly is as our cottage positively groans with all the knick knacks that she won't let go of.
One of our favourite examples of a total lack of sentiment though was a girl on Flog It who wanted to sell the jewellery she'd inherited from her granny as - "I want to spend it on a chocolate fountain at my wedding"!
Ho hum

Hi Nashie
I think if I had been that girl's Mother I would have dunked her in her chocolate fountain.

Me too! How could anyone be so callous. She will get her comeuppance one day I am sure.

I'm sure I remember 'Mona' being a family member - but I could well be wrong. Who knows how things come on the market it could be that without realising the book was caught up in a clear out and happily made it's way to you Jill. Thankfully you appreciate it. :)
